The holter
24h, 48h, 72h and 7 day ECG
A 24, 48, 72hour or 7 day electrocardiogram monitor provides a constant recording of your heart rate and rhythm over that period of time. The test is prescribed for various symptoms such as irregular or fast heart rates, palpitations, dizziness and fainting spells. It also provides information on the effectiveness of medication and treatments. It is a safe and painless recording that involves a single electrode patch placed on your chest, like this image at the right.
The analyst will check the recoding and see if there are any abnormality. For example your heart rate can be too fast, too slow or irregular. You do not have to undress your whole upper body for this holter. Sometimes you are asked to keep a diary the entire time you are wearing the holter. This is in order to help the analyst analyse the recording.
You are not able to shower with the device, however you can detach the holter from the patch. The patch is waterproof and you can shower with it. When you place the holter back on please make sure that the four electrodes are connected. After an amount of time (24h, 48h, 72h or 7 days) you hand in the holter. Your physician wil discuss the results with you.
